Why Substrate Determines Hot Stamping Success

The essence of hot stamping is to “adhere the metallic layer of the hot stamping foil to the surface of the substrate.” How firmly it adheres, how fine it looks, and how long it lasts without peeling depends on 3 things:

  1. Substrate surface energy: High surface energy substrates (e.g., uncoated paper, vegetable-tanned leather) allow the hot stamping foil's adhesive layer to adhere easily; low surface energy (e.g., PE/PP plastics, glossy coated art paper) requires special foil formulations or pre-treatment.
  2. Substrate thermal stability: Paper has good heat resistance and can withstand high temperatures of 180°C; plastic deforms above its melting point; leather becomes brittle when overheated. Each substrate has its own safe temperature range.
  3. Substrate surface flatness: Rough substrates (e.g., textured leather, deckle-edged paper) require higher pressure or multiple stampings; smooth substrates can be done in one pass.

Choosing the right hot stamping foil + aligning process parameters = successful stamping in one go. Choosing incorrectly on either side will result in additional sampling time and material costs, or worse, product recalls due to peeling after shipment.

Hot stamping on plastic substrates is most prone to problems because plastic surface energy varies greatly, from 29 dyne/cm for PP to 40 dyne/cm for PVC.

Industry Tip: PP and PE must undergo surface treatment (corona or flame treatment) before hot stamping. Surface energy must be raised to above 38 dyne/cm for firm adhesion. Stamping without surface treatment will result in natural peeling after 3 months—this is the #1 cause of OEM returns.

How to Read the Table:

  1. Start with the median values for sampling (e.g., for cardboard, use 140°C / 250 kg / 0.7 sec)
  2. Adjust up or down based on results: adjust 10°C / 50 kg / 0.2 sec each time
  3. The parameter difference for the same roll of hot stamping foil on different substrates can be up to 30%, please sample individually and do not apply universally
  4. It is also recommended to re-sample when changing to a new batch of hot stamping foil, as batch variations in formulation may require ±5°C adjustments

Common Failure Troubleshooting FAQ

A: Temperature is too high, adhesive layer overflow. Re-try after lowering by 10°C, if still present, lower by another 5°C.

A: Insufficient pressure, metallic layer not fully transferred. Re-try after increasing by 50 kg/cm², combined with a moderate temperature increase of 5°C.

A: Insufficient substrate surface energy (especially if PP/PE was not corona treated), or wrong formula selected. Check substrate treatment process, confirm hot stamping foil model matches the substrate.

A: Substrate surface flatness issue or uneven pressure from the hot stamping machine. Check the hot stamping machine's platen levelness, substrate thickness tolerance, and heating plate temperature distribution.

A: Non-water/abrasion resistant formula was used. Fabric and leather products require “water and abrasion resistant” specific hot stamping foil (standard foils will peel after 3 washes).
